Podcast: 2022-Q1 world swine industry update

In this 53rd episode of the Real P3 podcast, Dr Casey Bradley spoke to Pig Progress’ very own editor, Vincent ter Beek. Together they discussed swine industry news updates from Europe to the US and beyond.

The Real P3 podcast series is an initiative where pork professionals from around the globe share their thoughts, insights, and solutions to their day-to-day challenges in the pig farming and production industry. This episode is slightly different to the previous ones and focussed on current topics relating to the swine sector that have pushed even Covid-19 from the headlines.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and its impact on food security

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has taken over headlines worldwide. This podcast began with a discussion around the huge impact this war is having on agriculture. Ter Beek noted the analysis done by the French Pork and Pig Institute (IFIP) looking at the effects of the war on both grain supply and commodity prices, and swine production. Food security is at risk in many regions.

A shortage of fertilisers

Bradley noted that over in the US, as seen in Europe, a shortage of fertilisers and sky-rocketing costs of nitrogen and urea, for example, will result in many growers not being able to plant this year. What will the impact be, not only in the upcoming months but years?

Gas prices, policies, and decision-making

Gas prices are high and continue to rise. Gas is a huge input cost in the food supply sector and will influence prices. Bradley emphasised the role of policy-makers and politicians in having a view of the bigger picture when making decisions.

Sustainable energy, solar panels and electric cars

What ambitious plans are being implemented in terms of sustainable energy, what does the future look like, and what will might the outcomes be?

Shows, events and exhibitions

Ter Beek and Bradley recapped the rescheduled and upcoming events, shows and webinars taking place worldwide in the global swine sector with May set to be a busy month.

African Swine Fever

Ter Beek gave an update on the latest outbreaks and spread of African Swine Fever, including in Thailand, and regions to keep a close eye on.

Another update on the global swine sector will feature in Q2.
