The state of Rhode Island has become the 9th in the United States of America to ban the use of sow gestation crates.
The law passed with broad support and was signed by governor Lincoln Chafee late June, 2012.
Also passed by the state were laws eliminating crates for veal calf production as well as routine tail docking of cows. The bills were introduced by Rhode Island Senate Majority Leader Dominick Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4) and Rep. Patricia Serpa (D – Dist. 27).
Rhode Island joins Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Oregon which have also passed similar laws to phase out gestation crates.
