US: Fire kills 11,000 pigs

At a farm in Minnesota a fire broke out and killed 11,000 sows and piglets this weekend.

The fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Run Farm near Truman. There is no clear indication of the cause of the fire as the incident is still under investigation.

“We’re trying to figure that out with the assistance of the fire marshal,” Pipestone System CEO Luke Minion stated.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. A farm this size is going to take seven months (to rebuild). It could be a year before producers can get back to normal pig flow,” Minion stated.

About 4,000 sows and 6,000 to 7,000 piglets were killed and about 1,300 sows were saved, saidto Minion. Another Cougar Run operation with 2,800 sows which is about a mile away was unaffected.

According to the Truman Fire Department the fire caused damage in the multimillions.

Rebuilding will  begin as soon as the site is cleared, stated Minion. No employees were injured in the fire.
