The Ukraine has seen an increase this year in the dynamism of its pork production industry. At the end of the year, the country is forecast to have produced 750,000 tonnes of pork. This is 50,000 tonnes more than last year.
These figures were made public by Ukraine’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Policy director of livestock Andrew Getya.
He said, “Comparing current the level of pork production in the Ukraine this year with last year, we see a clear trend of growth. In particular, in 2011, farmers produced 700,000s tonnes of pork, while until the end of this year it is planned to increase production to the 50,000 tonnes. Thus, we see a gradual development of the whole pork production industry.”
Talking about the quality of Ukrainian pork, Getya pointed out that it meets all the Ukraine and international requirements and standards. Furthermore, he said, Ukraine authorities are currently keeping tight control over all pork production in the country, to ensure its quality. Getya also noted that Ukrainian shop shelves are currently dominated with pork from Ukraine producers.
“Domestic pork is dominant on the Ukrainian market. Overall, during the last 2 to 3 years there was a reduction in pork imports to the Ukraine. Prices for live animals did not reduced on the domestic market, so imports, we can conclude, do not hamper domestic production,” the head of department stated.
However, Ukraine experts pointed out that the industry still need government support.
“Strengthened import controls are needed to support the sector, and loans for the reconstruction and modernization of already operating enterprises. This will reduce the cost of production, and open opportunities for exports,” stated Sergei Hnatiuk, general director of the Ukrainian corporation for industrial scale meat production Tvarinprom.
