Ukraine may resume imports of pork from Poland during the coming months, according to the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of the country, Igor Schweich. Imports were banned because of the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Poland a the beginning of the year.

He noted that the issue was sharply raised by the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Ukraine during their recent business meeting.

From the standpoint of the ambassador, there is no longer any ground for the ban on imports of Polish pork to Ukraine, as there have been no new outbreaks of ASF in Ukraine since February and the veterinary services has taken all measures to curb the spread.

“The principle of free trade has not been cancelled, they are basic and immutable. We may close the market to Polish products due to non-compliance with veterinary regulations, but not for political or economic reasons,” Igor Schweich said.

He added that Poland is ready to move from being a competition in this market to being partners with Ukraine to jointly enter other markets.

“Generally Poland consistently ranked third after Brazil (60% of total imports) and Germany (16-25%) in terms of supply of pork to Ukraine. Let’s see how it will return to its position,” commented the head of the Association of Pig Breeders of Ukraine, Arthur Loza.
