US food service company Aramark announced its intention to eliminate the use of all pork from animals bred using gestation crates in its US supply chain by 2017.
Aramark has joined dozens of other food-service companies, restaurant chains, and supermarkets that have pledged to remove the use of sow gestation crates from their supply chain. Nine US states have also banned the practise.
Aramark announced its intentions with the Humane Society of the United States.
Aramark has asked its primary pork suppliers to develop plans for reducing, and then eliminating, gestation crates. Aramark will also restructure its suppliers’ contracts; suppliers in future will be required to provide a gestation crate phase-out plan.
Aramark is a company based in Philadelphia, USA.
