Russia increases pork production

Russia is continuing to increase the volume of pork production, accompanied with the growth of the market share of large agricultural holdings, according to the recent report of the country’s Ministry of Agriculture.

For the first nine months of 2014 production of pork exceeded 2.6 million tonnes in live weight which is a 6.4% increase year-on-year, according the Ministry of Agriculture.

At the same time, the production growth of large agricultural companies reached 12.2%. They produced more than 2 million tonnes of pork. The market share of t small producers continues to drop.

The most rapid rise of production has been observed in Tambov Oblast (79% year-on-year), Pskov Oblast (77%) and Kursk Oblast (27%). The production in the Southern Federal District decreased by 0.2% year-on-year, in Volga Federal District by 0.9% and in the Far East Federal District by 4.3%.

As of 1 October, the average price of pigs in live weight amounts to RUB 107.9 (US$2.6) per kg. In comparison, for the same period last year the price of pork in live weight amounted about RUB 73, 5 (US$1.8) per kg.
