Podcast on pig breeding and sow mortality

Sow mortality, proper selection and diversification are themes that come by at this episode of the Real P3 podcast. Dennis Wooden from Michigan, USA, shares his long-time experience with swine breeding.

The Real P3 podcast series is an initiative where pork professionals from around the world are interviewed about challenges and solutions in their day-to-day work.

“Raised from birth showing and raising pigs”

Dr Casey Bradley Casey speaks to a friend of her father, long-time pure-bred breeder, Dennis Wooden age 63, who has been involved in many organisations in the swine and agriculture industries.

After being on the state board for 39 years and being a past president of the Michigan Pork Producers, Wooden was “raised from birth showing pigs and raising pigs”. He talks about how, at that time, “we really didn’t have that many cross-bred sows,” and notes that the industry has seen significant changes. “We were in total confinement in about 1972,” he says, owing to labour, land prices and diseases.

During this podcast, Dr Bradley and Wooden discuss sow mortality and proper selection, what diversification looks like in the swine industry, and why it’s important to be concerned with the problems facing the small producers in both the US and around the world.

The episode is the 3rd in a 3-part series of the Real P3 podcast, in which Dr Casey Bradley celebrates the 70th birthday of her father, swine nutritionist Craig Bradley.
