Sow Management

It is with pride that for the third year in a row, Pig Progress presents a special issue dedicated to a major theme in the worldwide swine industry.

After having published a special edition entirely focused on Piglet Feeding, late 2011 – and Alternative Growth Promotion, late 2012, this year’s edition touches on Sow Management.

Key to this theme is the steady development which moves away from gestation crates or sow stalls, everywhere in the world. In some places, like Australia and the European Union, legislation already prescribes stall-free gestation; in others, like the US, pork producers see the market veering increasingly towards stall-free production.

Against this background, Pig Progress aimed to combine a special edition which describes modern sow management on the brink of 2014. Where do we come from, how best to deal with sows in groups, what are the latest feeding strategies and what other developments may still lie around the corner?
