Heather Mills: ban gestation crates

20-03-2007 | | |

Animal rights activists have been joined by Heather Mills in their campagin to get gestation crates forbidden at farms throughout the United Kingdom (UK).

The ex-wife of former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney is backing a campaign by vegetarian and animal welfare campaign group Viva!, calling for the UK government to ban the crates for gestating sows.

Making a protest against pig farming practices used by suppliers to UK retailer Marks & Spencer, Mills, 39, last week delivered a petition to Downing Street and led a demonstration at the retailer’s flagship London store.

Mills’ action could be called somewhat remarkable as gestation crates already are the target of tight welfare laws throughout the European Union. As from January 1st, 2013, all gestation crates in the EU have to be forbidden.

Both the industry and the farmers are currently in the process of adapting their ways of keeping gestating sows.
