Germany, Belgium: sharp decrease in pig prices

03-01-2011 | | |

German slaughterhouses have drastically decreased their prices for pigs at New Year’s Eve – with potential consequences for prices in surrounding countries, like Belgium.

German abattoirs Vion Nord and Tönnies dropped their prices by €0.07 to €1.35 per kg slaughterweight. Pig trade in Germany had as usual come to a standstill between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

In Belgium, where abattoirs have followed the price decrease, agricultural organisation ABS has reacted in disappointment, speaking about a ‘dramatic’ end of the year and hinting to potential protest actions, as the pig market has been difficult in the last four years.

Experts expect that German trade will come back to previous levels rapidly.
