France slaughters more pigs

French abattoirs have in the first quarter of this year slaughtered almost 6,2 million pigs. That is an increase of 2.4% year-on-year.

In the month of March, the slaughter figures were over 6% higher than a year earlier, the Department of Agriculture reports.

The average slaughter weight was 0.7% higher at 82.9 kilos in the first three months of the year. The department also says that the consumption of pork and pork products increased by 1.4% compared to a year earlier. In this period, France did not import more pork meat from other countries.

However, the country could increase exports by 1% but that is compared to the beginning of last year when export figures were highly influenced by the Russian embargo. France succeeds in exporting more pork to non-EU countries, particularly in north Asia.
