In total, the 27 European Union countries exported 1.48 million metric tons of pork in the first six months of 2011 – a year-on-year rise of 18.8%, Dutch agricultural daily Agrarisch Dagblad reports on the basis of European Commission figures.

Russia remains the most important importer of European pork. Russia’s EU imports grew by 8% in the last six months to 412,000 metric tons – which represents a market share of 27.8%.

Hong Kong and China are on the rise as importers of European pork – their growth figures are 17% and 60% respectively. They imported 245,000 and 136,000 metric tons respectively.

EU exports to Japan hardly grew – a 4% increase to 117,000 metric tons could be noted. South Korea however doubled its imports to 112,000 metric tons.

Figures over June 2011 alone reveal European Union pork exports of 255,000 metric tons. This is a rise of 15.4% in comparison to June 2010 – and equal to exports in May.
