The Danish Agriculture & Food Council (L&F) believes there is still considerable growth potential for Danish piglet exports.
This is despite the fact that piglet production and exports are already among the most important pillars of the Danish pig industry nowadays. Nicolaj Nørgaard, director of the council’s Pig Research Centre (VSP), told newspaper Jyllands-Posten that the Danish pig production is expected to grow over the next ten years, despite ongoing structural changes, to more than 36 million head per year – exceeding current production by 7 million piglets or one-fifth.
Larger litters and lower mortality
Experts forecast mainly larger litters and lower mortality amongst piglets, Agra Europe report. Moreover, it is expected that the number of Danish sow places will slightly increase in the following decade.
Nørgaard said that a stable political framework is an important prerequisite for increasing the production of piglets. He urged the current government, therefore, to refrain from laying further obstacles in the way of pig breeders and focus more on production and competition.
Nørgaard also expects antibiotics consumption to rise.
