Angola wants to reduce pork imports

Angola imports US$500 million worth of pork, beef, chicken and eggs per year – this is too high in Minister of Agriculture Afonso Pedro Canga’s view.

Speaking at an entrepreneurs’ fair in Cubal, Angola, the minister announced the government’s intention of reducing imports to Angola. Imports are estimated to be worth US$500 million per year.

While Angola lacks large investments in infrastructure, technicians, technology and other services, the Angolan government has started programmes to rehabilitate production facilities, train veterinary researchers, agricultural and fishing programmes, and the  construction of roads for transport and distribution of goods.

Pedro Canga stressed that the government’s efforts in this direction were stressed at ensuring self-sufficiency among Angola’s farmers, and raising enough produce to make Angola an export-driven economy.
