Wageningen research into weaner feeding
Researchers from Wageningen University and Research Centre in The Netherlands believe that weaned piglets can overcome poor feed intake by learning from their mother.
Poor feed intake compromises weaner health, welfare and performance. In the past studies focused on changing feed formulation. However, now Wageningen researchers are taking another angle. They will analyse how piglets learn from their mother when eating together and how information is transmitted between both parties.
Taste or smell
The study over the next four years will focus on whether piglets will eat feed that has a taste or smell they recognise like that from milk or the womb.
The overall aim is to help to reduce the problems around weaning by using new or different feeding measures.
