Vietnamese health squads to battle PRRS

18 task forces have to curb Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), also known as blue ear disease in Quang Nam province, Vietnam. The disease killed over 20,000 pigs in the past two weeks in this area.

The special teams will monitor the slaughter and transport of pigs in the province.

Government compensation
The provincial People’s Committee instructed local agencies to carry out a mass cull of infected pigs in epidemic zones. The committee also announced that breeders who lost their pigs to the epidemic would receive VND10,000 (US$0,62) per kilogram in government compensation.

Not spread further

At a meeting last week with the provincial administration, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat called for the mobilization of all available resources to stop the outbreak, stressing that the disease must not spread to other provinces. Nguyen Thanh Quang, head of the provincial agriculture department said the province needed around VND10 billion (US$62,500) to support affected breeders.
