USDA: Canadian pork exports fell in 2006
Canadian pork exports fell year-on-year in 2006 for the first time in ten years, according to a report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The USDA said total exports over the year reached 1.08 million tonnes, down 0.4% on 2005 levels, the report said.
In 2007, a drop in Canadian pig numbers and forecast increased live-pig exports will see pork exports fall by approximately 3% on 2006 levels.
Canada Pork International
Last week, a different report by Canada Pork International estimated Canada had increased its total amount of exported pork a little bit in 2006.
Altogether, this report said, Canadian food companies sold 1,037 million tonnes pork to foreign countries, a 7,000 tonne growth in comparison to 2005.
However, the report said, the total value of pork had decreased to US $2.13 billion.
