US: Pork Producers to look at market weight

21-01-2008 | |

Iowa State University is encouraging producers to take a new look at their market weight strategies in the light of lower hog prices and higher feed costs.

University extension livestock economist John Lawrence said it’s time for producers to evaluate their strategies they are still marketing at the same weight that they did when corn was US$2 a bushel and live hogs were near US$60.

The University has developed some examples of calculations for producers to look at and also offers a spreadsheet calculator to help people work out what’s best for their operation.

More information and two versions of a spreadsheet calculator are available free of charge through a link on the Iowa Pork Industry Center Web site at www.ipic.iastate.edu
