US pork board launches “Pork Quality Assurance Plus”

08-06-2007 | |

The United States National Pork Board this week unveiled its new quality-assurance programme, the “Pork Quality Assurance Plus” (PQA Plus), an update to the industry’s pork-safety 1989 programme.

The PQA Plus combines two existing programs: PQA certification and the Swine Welfare Assurance Program.

It includes three steps:

  1. an individual certification through education
  2. an assessment of sites where pigs are being raised
  3. and an independent third-party audit to assure continuous improvement goals of the program are being implemented in the industry.

PQA Plus is the result of nearly two years of collaborative work from all sectors of the pork industry. It will have a three-year implementation period.
