US may consider pork exports from Brazil

Brazilian Pork Industry and Exporter Association (ABIPECS) is confident that US inspectors will visit Brazil to ascertain whether the country’s pork exports are fit to enter the US market.

“We’ve entered 2008 with optimism,” said Pedro Camargo Neto, president of ABIPECS. “We hope to receive in the first half of the year a mission from the United States to initiate a risk-analysis study, which represents the first step in the process of opening that market.”

However, the US has not accepted Brazil’s invitation as yet.

Brazil’s optimism emanates from pork and pork variety meat exports which rose to 606,512 metric tons from January through December of 2007, a nearly 15% increase from 528,190 metric tons in the same period in 2006.

In addition, export value grew almost 19% to $1.23 billion.

Russia was the top market for Brazilian pork and pork variety meat exports, accounting for more than 45.96% of total export volume (278.724 metric tons) and 54.23% of total export value (US$ 667.5 million) through December 2007. Hong Kong was the second largest market, with a 17.51% increase in volume and a 14% in value in 2007.
