US mandatory labelling to become law

National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), in the US, expects the proposal for mandatory Country of Origin Labelling to proceed and be passed into law.

A revised version of the mandatory Country of Origin Labelling legislation is scheduled to effect in September 2008.

The US is still grasping the idea of the revised proposal; however Canadian cattle and pork producers are fearful that the revised proposal could take the stance of a non tariff trade barrier. Canadian producers are pushing the Canadian government to oppose the provision on the basis of The North American Free Trade Agreement NAFTA and World Trade Organization agreements.

Kirk Ferrell, NPPC public policy vice president, has noted that US pork producers are still opposed to the provision, and adds that it is no longer a matter of whether the legislation will go forward, but a question of when.
