According to a study by USDA’s Economic Research Service, in comparison to 10 years ago, US consumers are not paying as much attention to nutrition information on food labels.
Information use changes by category: – use declined 11% for the ingredient list – use declined 10% for information about calories, fat, cholesterol, and sodium – use declined about 3% for nutrition facts – use remained unchanged for information about sugars – use increased by 2% for fibre information
The decrease in use of labels was biggest for individuals aged 20 to 29 years old, those with no education beyond high school and those who spoke primarily Spanish, a group that increased from 2% to 6% of the population over the 10 year period.
