US and China discuss meat-trade barriers

04-09-2007 | |

US and Chinese agricultural officials are discussing Beijing’s ban on the leanness-enhancing feed additive ractopamine, causing China to ban pork plants.

China recently banned meat from eight US pigmeat facilities after detecting traces of ractopamine in their shipments, bound for the Chinese capital.

Washington wants the Chinese to drop the ban, as the trade barrier is considered to be unjustified.

USDA press secretary Keith Williams said more technical talks are scheduled for mid-September.
