UK: Parliament wants pig industry probe

24-07-2008 | |

Britain’s Members of Parliament are to investigate the disastrous state of the British pig industry when they return from the summer recess on October.

The Parliament’s Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) committee will look in particular at:

• What is wrong with the pig industry in England?

• Are present problems more than just a cyclical imbalance between supply and demand?

• Are domestic pig welfare standards a principal reason that English producers have problems competing with those outside the UK?

• Are there other reasons?

• What could supermarkets and the hospitality industry do to alleviate the pressure on the domestic pig industry?

• Can the Government do more to support the industry either directly or through its public procurement policies?

The deadline for written submissions to the committee is September 11 but the committee says it will also be taking oral evidence.
