Tulip acquires British Geo Adams & Sons

Danish meat processing group Danish Crown announced yesterday that its UK subsidiary Tulip will acquire the British meat processing company Geo Adams & Sons.

Geo Adams & Sons, based in Spalding, in the pig area of Lincolnshire, comprises the fresh meat business Geo Adams & Sons Limited and the prepared foods and sliced cooked meat business Adams Pork Products.

The operations have five production facilities with 2,000 employees and a combined annual turnover of €241 million.

Meat conglomerates
The takeover will create one of Britain’s biggest meat conglomerates, having a UK sales of £1.2 billion (€1.75 billion) and a total of 9,000 employees.

Geo Adams & Sons was established about 100 years ago and is responsible for about 8% of British pig slaughtering.

Strategic step
Carsten Jakobsen, present chairman of Tulip, will chair the board of the new group. He commented, “This is an important strategic step forward for Tulip. This transaction will help us to supply the UK consumer with an even wider range of high quality products. In an increasingly competitive market place, it is crucial that we are in a position to produce quality products at the best value for our customers.”

The acquisition is conditional on clearance by the UK regulatory authorities, but is expected to be completed in November.

Danish Crown, headquartered in Randers, Denmark, is the world’s largest meat exporter. The group has some 25,000 employees and an annual turnover of €6.5 billion.
