SPF status on 40% of Danish pig companies
About 40% of the pig producers in Denmark has obtained an SPF certificate.
This means that almost two out of three sows in Denmark is being kept at a site that is demonstrably free of certain diseases. The same accounts for one third of all finishers.
The disease status is controlled by SPF Sundhedsstyringen, a non-commercial department of the Danish Meat Association, publishing test results at her website.
It is said that Danish growers pay about €12 extra for a gilt if her background is a SPF breeding farm, free from mycoplasma. Similarly, piglets free from APP, will yield about €6 extra. A mycoplasma-free grower can get about €1 extra for a piglet.
