Sow stall ban initiated in Illinois senate
The use of gestation crates for sows may be banned in the American state of Illinois.
Last week, legislation that would ban its was introduced in the state’s senate.
Senate Bill 1337 was introduced by the Democratic senator James DeLeo. The bill has been initiated by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and was introduced as part of the group’s lobby day earlier this month.
The legislation is similar to the ballot initiatives banning the use of gestation stalls, stalls for veal calves and battery cages for egg laying hens that have passed in have passed in several other US states.
The proposed legislation would become effective January 1, 2010.
At the moment, crate use has been banned by California, Colorado, Arizona, Oregon and Florida and it has been discussed in Maryland.
Illinois, however, would be the first US state to ban crates having a very high pig density.
