Smithfield Foods may be eyeing packaged meats opportunities

17-06-2011 | |

It was previously announced that Smithfield cancelled plans to purchase the remaining shares of Spain’s Campofrio Food Group SA, following this, Smithfield Foods seems interested in packaged meats acquisitions.

“We would be interested and routinely look at potential opportunities to do something particularly on the packaged-meats side,” said C. Larry Pope, Smithfield’s chief executive officer.

“We would look at something if it made sense . The fact that we backed away from Campofrio, that has a lot of potential, should give you comfort we are not going to do something silly.”

Smithfield currently has a 37%  stake in the Spanish company Campofrio.
