US meat company Smithfield Foods Inc. has announced that the company will, this week, increase pork production at its Sioux City, Iowa, plant. The pork produced will be shipped to China.
The deal was announced in August that Smithfield would sell 60 million lbs of pork to a Chinese trading company.
The plant will begin processing an additional 3,200 hogs a day next week, or about half of a normal production shift, said Dennis Pittman, Smithfield spokesman. Also, the plant will add about 250 workers.
