Slaughterweight of pigs drops

01-04-2008 | |

The slaughterweight of pigs has dropped this year, according to a report from German market and price analysis centre, ZMP.

In the first 11 weeks of this year, German class E-P pigs, weighed on average 94.5kg – which represents a reduction of 400g in fat on their ribs.

In both France and the Netherlands, pigs are also lighter, while in Denmark and the UK, a clear increase in slaughterweight was recorded.

Pig producer associations are recommending a reduction in slaughterweight on account of the expensive feed prices at the moment.

Large slaughter companies are, however, paying less for pigs that are too light.
