Stockpiled bananas are being fed to pigs on the island of Hainan, southern China following rumours that the bananas may contain a SARS like virus and could cause cancer.
The rumour that Hainan bananas could cause cancer began after the island’s plantations were infected with a fungus blight called yellow wilt or Panama disease.
China’s Agriculture Minister, last month, dismissed the rumour that the bananas might contain viruses similar to SARS, which killed nearly 800 people before it was brought under control in 2003.
According to Chinanews.com, the price of bananas, at some markets, on Hainan have fallen to almost nothing.
