Russia has reopened its borders to Canadian pork imports; a development that Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Gerry Ritz says will help Canada’s fledgling pork industry.
The ban, in place since April 1st, began due to concerns about fraudulent export documents. Canadian trade official say those concerns have been addressed by making the Canadian Food Inspection Agency increase the security features on certificates, Ritz said.
Canadian pork exports to Russia in 2007 totalled $144.8 million and represent Canada’s third-largest market for pork.
