Seventeen German and two French pig slaughterhouses have now been told to stop pork exports to Russia due to the discovery of antibiotic residues and Salmonella by the Russian authorities, according to Danish media reports.
Also two meat processing plants and cheese dairies in Lithuania have been removed from the list of companies allowed to export to Russia.
US furious
The closure comes just weeks after some US slaughterhouses have been removed from the list, which sparked furious protests from the US And almost simultaneously, several Danish sites have been reopened to export meat to Russia.
The Russians have plans to increase pork production by 2.7 million tonnes or one third by 2012. And further plans to invest €2,5 billion in the domestic pork industry, which will allow to significantly decrease the Russian pork import dependence. (ev)
