Romania to slaughter 20,000 pigs

07-08-2007 | |

Swine fever has been discovered at a farm in the west of the country – Romanian authorities have been ordered to slaughter 20,000 pigs.

Romania has previously been banned of exporting pork to other EU countries, due to recurring problems with swine fever. The farms in Timis county, which belong to Smithfield foods – of the largest US meat processing companies – will be investigated. Swine fever is contagious, infected pigs must be slaughtered and carcasses are to be incinerated or buried.

The virus has already been discovered on the Cenei farm, where the mass slaughter is to take place.
