Romania: end to CSF by December 2007

Marian Avram, head of Romania’s veterinary authority, said that on Monday. The plan – estimated to total €45.3 million, needed to vaccinate pigs and eradicate the disease – is to be completed by December 2007.

 

Half of the money will be funded by the European Union (EU), Avram said.

In January 2003, the EU placed import bans on live pigs and pork from Romania due to the active CSF outbreaks in Romania. These bans will be maintained until the CSF eradication programme is finished.

 

European veterinary experts will assess Romania’s progress nine months into the eradication period.

 

The country’s veterinary authority reported 124 active CSF outbreaks at the end of September.
