Pork leaner than ever in Canada

31-10-2007 | |

Two new fact sheets issued recently by Ontario pork reveal that Canadian pork is now leaner than previously.

The two fact sheets ‘Pork a Healthy Choice’ and ‘Pork a Lean Choice’ are intended as guides for the Health Check programme of the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation and as general food guides.

Extra lean
Following a nutrient analysis conducted in 2006, Canadian pork is now classified as ‘extra lean’ containing 7.5% fat or even less including all trimmed pork cuts except ribs.

The study also revealed that an average serving of raw trimmed pork contains a mere 2.7g of fat.

Marlene McDonald, of the Manitoba Pork Council, attributes the fat reduction to new feeding techniques and increased trimming.
