Pork exports Brazil in uplift

19-04-2007 | |

USDA’s Foreign Ag Service says expansion in Brazil’s pork production is forecast to be 3.5% higher for 2007.

Exports have been constrained by trade restrictions imposed by the EU and Russia since the FMD outbreak. Especially the state of Santa Catarina is affected by the ban.

The World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) has said that this state should be considered free of FMD without vaccination. It is doubtful if this will have much effect on lifting the import restrictions of some countries. There have been some opportunities, growth in Asian markets such as Hong Kong and Singapore, FAS said.

Due to the export problems domestic consumption has increased sharply. But supply is exceeding demand. Good prices in the previous years has boosted production.
