Ropadiar, a feed supplement for pigs and poultry based on the natural herb oregano, is being marketed following 18 months of successful trials on farms in Yorkshire.
The appetiser and flavouring agent, marketed by GE Baker (UK) Ltd of Woolpit, Suffolk, is said to increase feed intake, and consequently to improve growth rate, particularly with weaners, growing pigs and broilers.
Immune system
Ropadiar, made by Ropapharm International, the Netherlands, contains oregano oils extracted from specially-selected plants. These are reported to contain antibacterial, antifungal, anti-parasitic and anti-oxidative properties with a positive effect on the immune system.
In addition, it is used in lactation diets in the Netherlands where heavier weaning weights by increased sow feed intake have been reported.
Ropadiar is available in 25kg bags and 7.5 kg tubs and can be added to diets between 150g and 500g per tonne.
