Pig slaughters up 5% in Germany

14-01-2009 | |

The number of pigs slaughtered in Germany in 2008 were up 5.3% on 2007 figures to a total of 47.5 million pigs, states German markets and price reporting agency, ZMP.

Over the pre-Christmas period, total slaughter numbers in the country exceeded 1 million, a considerable increase on earlier weeks. From a producer point of view, price development in 2008 was relatively positive.

Although prices at slaughter were on average 16.6% above year earlier levels, higher production costs mostly offset this increase for producers.
