Pig faeces to generate power

A pig farmer has plans to trim the running costs of his desalinator by making use of pig effluent.

Robert Adams, a pig farmer in south-west Victoria plans to use methane from stored feaces to generate power.

According to Adams, the “biogas recovery unit” will help him to save US$10,000 a year – money currently needed for electricity to run his desalinator.

“From the research that we’ve done and looking at it, I’d have quite a few tanks set up to do this recovery system,” he said.

Adams says that this unit will help to cut down on the amount of gas floating in the air, as well as reduce the smell.
