Australia’s biggest piggery, Nippon Meat’s Tong Park has been purchased by The Pig improvement Company (PIC) for an undisclosed price.
The state-of-the-art piggery at Warra, located on southern Queensland’s Darling Downs, employs 65 people and houses almost 7,000 sows and their piglets.
Company chief executive officer Paul O’Leary says grain prices and fluctuating currencies are some of the factors making it tough for the pork industry.
“At the same time with the opportunities we had and the robustness of that facility in terms of its consistency of output and the tremendous quality that it can achieve, it really does give us some confidence to go forward with that investment,†he said.
