The Australian pig industry is considering launching an electronic system to trace animals. This involves a paperless system with swipe cards instead of individual animal tags.
PigPass, a National Vendor Declaration (NVD) for pigs, is currently used with Australian pig exports.
Bill Salter from Australian Pork Limited (APL) says they are now looking at a paperless system with swipe cards instead of individual animal tags. The new system would work on the basis of having everyone involved in PigPass being registered on the APL database.
“When animals are moved the transaction details would be recorded into that database. Now one way of doing that would be through using a swipe card,” says Salter.
