NZ pig farmer fined for effluent contamination

A farmer from Kimbolton, New Zealand, has been fined more than $18,500 for allowing piggery effluent to contaminate a stream.

The pig farmer was told by a Fielding district court Judge that his conduct offended any right thinking person in the present environment and needed to be denounced.

The breach of abatement notice was serious and it was important that such notices, when issued by regional authorities, be strictly complied with. The downstream effects were minimal due to the remote location of the operation.

Regional council chairman Garrick Murfitt describes the outcome of the case as a welcome signal that the courts are prepared to back the efforts to ensure farm and industrial effluent are properly disposed of.
