NPPC to comment on proposed GIPSA rule

21-07-2010 | |

National Pork Producers Council President Sam Carney, a pork producer from Adair, Iowa, and NPPC board member Mark Legan, a producer from Coatesville, Ind., will be available for interviews on a rule related to contracts and marketing arrangements for selling and buying livestock following tomorrow’s congressional hearing on the subject.

The U.S. House Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry held a hearing July 20 on a rule proposed by USDA’s Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration dealing with livestock and poultry contracts as well as on other agriculture issues.

After an initial review of the proposed rule, NPPC believes it is overly broad and very vague, with terms included in it not very well defined. As written, it would have a negative effect on the ability of pork producers to enter into arrangements to sell their hogs – and for packers to buy them.
