New Russian import restrictions for EU meat
The Russian authorities demand that all the EU meat that is imported into Russia from March 31 onwards need to have a detailed health report. Countries that do not include such a health certificate take the risk that all animal products will be denied to enter Russia, according to the Russian food agency.
Russia is a very important export market for the EU. Annually, the country imports EU meat and animal products worth €1.7 billion.
In 2005, The Netherlands exported €68 million of meat to Russia. The new import restriction is a result of the unsatisfactory meat shipments from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. According to Russia, some of the meat from these countries contained Salmonella and other bacteria.
