New PCV2 vaccine launched in Europe

21-09-2007 | |

Merial’s PCV2 vaccine Circovac® had its official European launch at last week’s agricultural show of SPACE in Rennes.

The vaccine had already obtained its European registration from the EMEA on the 21st of June 2007.

This allowed the animal health company to launch the product in all EU member states, from September to January 2008.

Inactivated vaccine
The product is an inactivated vaccine against Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2), to be administered to sows and gilts. Newborn piglets with a good colostrum uptake will benefit from a very effective specific passive protection against PCV2 infection.

The vaccination of the sows and gilts will help the immune system of their piglets to mature in a correct and efficient way during their first weeks of life. Further on, piglets will be able to build properly their own PCV2 active immunity.

Intramuscular
The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injections according to the following vaccination scheme:

• Gilts/ sows: one injection, followed three to four weeks later, by a second injection, at least two weeks before mating or farrowing, accordingly.

• Revaccination: one injection at each gestation, at least two to four weeks before farrowing.

Due to the emergency situation regarding PMWS and PCV2 diseases in several countries, the this vaccine was granted special authorisations for more than two years by the authorities in France, Germany, Denmark, UK and Canada.
