Pig producers gathered in the town of Abbeyleix on Tuesday to discuss the continued pig producers are currently experiencing.
Representatives of the processing sector and millers attended the meeting.
In an effort to alleviate the situation, Irish Minister for Agriculture, Mary Coughlan, has applied in writing for approval from the EU for Ireland’s proposed country of origin meat labelling legislation.
In her letter, which was revealed to Irish newspaper Irish Farmers Journal, she states that “Ireland has sent to the Commission proposed national legislation concerning the origin labelling of certain meats, including pigmeat.
“The draft legislation is based on the belief that consumers are entitled to transparent information as to the origin of their food. It is a matter of particular concern for the pigmeat sector and needs to be addressed in order to ensure that consumer confidence in EU products is not eroded”.
The Irish Farmers’ Association pigmeat committee chairman, Michael Maguire, told the meeting that the recent Bord Bia (Irish Food Agency) campaign on Quality Assurance had been quite successful at regaining a greater share of the home market for Irish pigmeat.
