Moose Jaw Packers, from Moose Jaw, in the Canadian state of Saskatchewan, has laid off 100 workers in an attempt to reorganise its operations.
“This is by no means permanent,” a company spokesman said.
The pork plant, partly owned by local growers, reopened only three months ago after earlier problems that saw the exit of its chief executive. Interim CEO Dave Worke said the company may shift to custom killing for other plants or explore opportunities in the Asian market. “We can do smaller runs, things the big guys don’t want to do,” Worke said.
The company continues a search for a permanent chief executive.
