Ham sandwich controversy in UK jail

30-10-2007 | |

Muslim inmates at a UK jail in Leeds are threatening to go to court over a ham sandwich appearing on the prison menu during Ramadan, according to Dutch newspaper Agrarisch Dagblad.

Compensation sought
£2m (€2.8m) in compensation is being sought by the inmates who believe that the action of the jail is an invasion of their human rights by offering the choice between a ham sandwich, a salad or a cheese sandwich in the prison canteen during the Muslim fasting period.

The prison directors claim that the prisoners received the wrong menu by accident. “We normally acknowledge dietary requirements,” stated a prison spokesman.

The prison maintains though that nobody received a ham sandwich in the end.
